Interview with Abigail Morris, HEAD OF MARKETING
Introduction and Background
WIDD: Can you tell us a little about your background and what led you to the career path you’re on today?
Abigail: I always wanted to be a teacher from as young as I can remember. I was a manager of a nursery and then went onto to do my teaching degree, whilst doing this I started doing some part time work for a company on their social media. I began to fall in love with Marketing and wanted to do more than just social media. I became fascinated with what it entailed. I was finding myself wanting to read, watch and listen to resources to help me grow. I then did courses to learn in this area. Before I knew it I made the big decision to not actually use my degree and go into teaching and decided to work full time in a new carer path of Marketing. I continued to work hard and am now the Head of Marketing managing a whole team.
WIDD: What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your journey, and how did you navigate them?
Abigail: Some big challenges have been feeling like a small fish in a big pond. I knew nothing about marketing when I started and have had to teach myself and constantly learn whilst juggling being a mum and running a household. I have sometimes had imposter syndrome that i’m not good enough for this job. I have worked through that by reminding myself of how hard I have worked.
WIDD: Is there a moment or experience in your career that you’re particularly proud of? Why does it stand out to you?
Abigail: I am always proud when I generate leads and business for the company and clients I work with. I love to make an impact there probably isn’t just one moment.
WIDD: What habits, tools, or strategies have helped you stay focused and motivated in your personal and professional life?
Abigail: Showing up everyday even when you don’t want to is a big one for me. Sometimes life is hard but keep pushing through and ask for help if you need it is so important. I think we worry far too much about asking for help being seen as weak but it is actually a strength to ask someone for help. I also try to prioritise and block time with the tasks I am going to be doing this keeps me focused on what i need to do.
WIDD: What advice would you share with women who are looking to make their mark in their respective fields?
Abigail: Don’t be afraid to make a change!
I was so scared to take that leap of faith and make a complete change, but life is too short, do what makes you happen.
WIDD: How have community, mentorship, or collaboration influenced your growth, and how can others tap into these resources?
Abigail: Mentorship is key, it’s so important to have someone to talk to and be supported by. This was key for me to bounce ideas of in a career, I was still learning. Also the power of facebook groups of other people like you is so important to share wins and challenges with.
WIDD: What’s your favourite quote or mantra that inspires you, and how has it shaped your perspective?
Abigail: Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life.
This couldn’t be any truer for me sometimes you have to just take that leap of faith and take a risk.
